This is no April Fool's Joke

There is a miscarriage of justice under way in Bangor, carried forward by Lazarus Aleander under the bogus claim of 'internal covenant business'. Let me share with you the details of this incident, so you can judge for yourselves how shameful his behavior is.

A month ago, Victor -- longtime resident of the city and brother to our own, highly regarded Heinrich -- joined the Carthian Movement. Part of his 'initiation' was a public announcement of his intent to join the Movement, and the reasons for it.

Aleander took some offense to this act (perhaps understandably -- Victor was once a member of the Invictus) and had Brogan 'discipline' Victor for the public embarrassment. Later that same evening -- after we performed Victor's official induction ceremony, he was attacked, beaten, staked, and taken into custody by some of the Invictus visitors to our city.

Let's talk about the number of things wrong here. A member of the Carthian Movement was attacked and kidnapped by the Invictus -- First Estaters who are not residents of Bangor, and do not have any idea how we do things here, or the reputation the Carthians have for working with other covenants in the best interest of the city. This attack and detainment was supposedly carried out because of Victor's announcement earlier that evening -- an incident that Victor had already been disciplined for at the Prince's request.

So these visitors took matters into their own hands, trumping Aleander's right of domain. They also attacked a resident of this city, and a member of another covenant -- one that is under my authority. They did this without approaching me, or any of the other Carthians in the city about the perceived slight (and how they could perceive Victor's statements in court as a slight, when he said nothing at all that was derogatory about the Invictus, is beyond me).

At this point, I would be willing to chalk this up to visitors getting above themselves (as is so often the case when dignitaries visit). I would be willing to work within the system we have in place, giving Lazarus the opportunity to correct the errors, return Victor to his covenant mates unharmed, and offer whatever compensation his honor deemed necessary for this bit of political tomfoolery.

How did he respond? I'll share with you the verbatim text of his message to me, delivered a mere three nights ago.

Mr. Walker,

This letter is to provide you with new information regarding the brother of Mr. Heinrich, Mr. Victor Von Heinrich. It has been decided that Mr. Victor Von Heinrich remain in torpor for the period of one month from this eve. This will be revisited at the next meeting of our Regional Council.

I will assure you all that Mr. Victor Von Heinrich will remain under closely monitored conditions and will not be harmed.

As a reply to your former missives, this is not a violent act against any covenant. This is lenient penalty for a traitor to the covenant. Others have been laid to permanent rest for less severe offenses.

I do hope that you will understand the severity of being a traitor and that we have been lenient with the punishment and open with information on the condition of Mr. Victor Von Heinrich.

Sincerely,
The Most Esteemed Sir Alder Lazarus Aleander
Prince, Rightful Viscount of Bangor, ME
Knight of the First Estate

I have a couple of questions for Lazarus Aleander. First of all, in what way is Victor a "traitor" to his former covenant? He publicly left the Invictus months ago, and has been a known associate (and 'probationary member') of the local Carthians for almost as long. In all that time, he has shared no Invictus secrets with us, and done nothing that in my opinion would be considered anything remotely resembling 'traitorous' behavior to his former covenant.

After all that time, months of independent (or 'unaligned') status, you choose now to declare him a traitor to your side, and take him into custody? There was no warning, nothing to indicate that he was treading dangerous ground through his association with us. How can that act be anything more than petulance over his public announcement? Explain that to me, Esteemed Alder, because I don't understand it.

Second, I'd like to question your willingness to abdicate your right of domain in Bangor. You had already punished Victor for his statement. He came to our covenant meeting that evening bearing the scars of Brogan's lash (figuratively speaking). But with this letter, you are indicating that the actions taken by these visitors are not only condoned by you, but you are deferring to the will of these outsiders in the administration of justice in your domain.

"Revisited at the next meeting of our Regional Council"? Don't make me laugh. Where was this council when Victor left the Invictus months ago? What authority does that council have over Bangor, and when did we cede it to them?

This whole affair reeks of political sour grapes, and you, Most Esteemed Alder, are hip deep in it.

In closing, I ask that my fellow citizens -- Lance or Crone, Dragon or Unaligned, look at how Lazarus has handled this matter, examine his response to our requests to have Victor returned to us, and watch how he treats those who have given much to Bangor. Given the detail I have brought to light in this letter, ask yourself, are we being unreasonable? Or do these acts -- initially performed by outsiders, but supported and condoned by our own 'prince' -- demonstrate a shameful miscarriage of justice?

The Long Silence

It has been a couple of months since I've said anything on this blog. Here's a bit of recap (and rant) about what I've been up to.

The end of December was taken up with a big ol' operation in Hamilton, Ontario (that's in Canada for the geographically challenged) where a whole mess of demon-worshiping vampires who call themselves the Brood were moving in. Over a hundred and fifty vampires descended on Hamilton in opposition to the Brood influx, and it culminated a big knock-down drag-out battle that the 'good guys' (that is to say, our side) won -- and with a surprisingly small number of casualties.

To be quite honest, I was amazed that we came out of it as well as we did. Quite frankly, it was a disaster waiting to happen, and it was narrowly averted -- largely because our opposition were not very forward-thinking in their tactical planning.

Despite the mass of bloodsuckers that "came together" for this little shindig, it was hardly a well organized and executed operation. Each group that came more-or-less kept to their own little clique, and there were some cases where (rash) actions taken by people involved in this thing directly contributed to a need to radically change the plans being laid for the 'final battle'.

Not only that, there were a significant number of people there who were so interested in glory-hogging the action at the 'primary' battle site, the other two fronts were very close to woefully undergunned, and things could have gone a lot worse than they did.

A lot of people came out of that patting themselves on the back for another successful attack against the Brood (this makes the third large-scale operation in the past year or so). Quite frankly, they should be thanking whatever god they worship that we were going up against a bunch of shovel-headed brain-dead cultists unable to formulate and execute a solid operation.

Heaven help us all if they get somebody with a pair of braincells to rub together, because we would be well and truly fucked.

Anyhow, my experience with that whole near fiasco put me off the notion of large-scale cooperation. It was tiring, discouraging, and quite frankly, I didn't want anything more than to go home, lock myself away in the studio, and collect checks from American Idol wannabes from the local college campus.

That's it, really. Things have been rather quiet on the home front lately, and that is just the sort of thing I like.

Until this past weekend. In a nice indicator of inter-covenant cooperation here in Bangor, we all contributed to a new Elysium in the area. We held the grand opening on Saturday, with a number of visitors from other parts of the Northeast up for a visit. I decided to make the night an event in another way -- we've had a 'probationary' Carthian for a few months, and I decided we would formally initiate him into the Movement this past weekend.

The initiation went well, and while there was the expected public embarrassment and private fallout, somebody went and over-reacted. See, the new recruit is a former Invictus (he publicly withdrew from their ranks several months ago), and his public declaration of support for the Carthians was taken as an insult by some of the visiting dignitaries.

So they gang-jumped him, staked him, and have him in custody in an unknown location.

This is bad, and -- not to be too blunt -- a fucking retarded move by those Invictus responsible. See, Victor (the new guy), is Heinrich's brother. That's Captain Heinrich of the CSDF, Heinrich of the massive amounts of mortal-world connections, and Heinrich of the short-fuse kick-ass and take names sort. He knows what happened to his brother, and he's none to happy about it.

I completely sympathize, and to a certain extent agree with him. They have attacked one of our own, and for no other reason than they feel slighted by his "defection". Do they realize the kind of shit-storm this can stir up? Are they trying to spark some kind of covenant war in the Northeast? I mean seriously, what kind of mental leap told them this was a good idea?

I don't know if I can keep this thing under control.

To be honest, I don't know if I want to keep this under control.

We'll see what the next few weeks bring.

Countdown to...?

So here I am in Hamilton, Ontario.

I've got a bad feeling about this.

I hope our enemies aren't half as clever as I am.

I hope to hell I get out of this alive.

Mea culpa

So... the last few weeks have been rough for me in some respects.

There has been a lot of angry, venomous invective that has been going around the global Carthian list of late. One-upmanship, chest-beating, and all the rest of it.

It has been very frustrating for me.

That, coupled with a few things going in my personal life -- reality clashing with ideology sorts of things -- have just had me fed up and wanting to throw my hands in the air... or grab a bat and start beating the crap out of things.

Anyhow, I let my emotions get the better of me, and I did something that I'm not especially proud of. I have taken steps to correct the matter, and I think everything is going to be okay in the long run... provided I can sort through all this stuff in my head.

(You know, my brain never worked this much when I was breathing...)

Anyhow... I would like to restate my public apology for my recent case of dumb-ass.

I hope to have a show here in the next week or two... provided I can actually give myself some studio time.

That's all for now.
