Things are Darkest at Night
by Josh Harrison
I watched you pledge your life to him,
Heard the vows pronounced.
Now the magic has faded
And you cry your pain to me.
My heart breaks along with yours,
You ask me what I think,
You ask what you should do.
I hesitate to answer.
How can you trust my advice
When I can't trust my motives for giving it?
As we go our separate ways
You embrace me and whisper your thanks.
I feel that magic charge,
The enchantment you placed on me unaware.
Now I lie awake
With my heartbeat pounding in my ears.
