Valyan's HeirsThe Journal of Thrak StonebrowLooking to pass the time, make some money, and earn some legend, we looked to the city message boards. We posted that we were looking for work and the like. Later that day, a dwarf came to the Blessing to meet with us. He introduced himself as Hiree. He told us that he had a bunch of artifacts and such that he needed escorted to Throal. The trip was to take place on the river, first stopping at the Floating City after three days, and then heading on to a port of access to Throal, arriving there a total of seven days after departure. We accepted and agreed to meet him the following morning. When we arrived at the ship, an old friend of Charye's dropped by, literally, to speak with her. We then met with Hiree and found out where his stuff would be kept. He also told us he had the only keys to his locked chests. We boarded, found our quarters, and looked ahead to the journey. The first two days passed uneventfully, but on the morning on the third day the alarm woke us. I grabbed my axe and rushed out onto the deck. As the fog was lifting, we could see another ship that was coming toward us and opening fire with its guns, pirates. Our ship was trading volleys with it, but we took a shot near the paddles that slowed us down to a crawl. It would only be a matter of time before they could board us. So, we went back to our quarters and suited up and prepared for the attack. When their ship moved up alongside, we were all ready. The pirates dropped gangplanks and started to come over. I stepped up to greet them with my axe. The first one fell in two blows, but more of them kept coming. One got in a lucky blow and managed to cut me pretty deeply. Too bad that only served to double my efforts. The two engaged with me only nicked me once more before I took them down. I then moved to help my other party members with their foes. After many more fell, they decided to retreat, and try a less protected ship, no doubt. The attack had taken its toll on the ship though, and we were delayed by a day in reaching the Floating City. After repairs were done the next day, we headed on back up the river towards Throal. We'd thought we'd put most worries away, but the day after we left the Floating City, Hiree was found murdered. His keys were missing, too. We've been keeping a constant eye on the artifacts, so they were okay for now. We, with the captain, reasoned that either the killer was still onboard, and probably only boarded at the Floating City, or that the killer had jumped ship after the crime. The disappearance of the keys pointed to the former, though. The captain decided to keep on schedule to Throal, and so we waited for the killer to make his next move. And, his final mistake. |
