Valyan's Heirs

The Journal of Thrak Stonebrow

To whoever reads this, I'm sorry if I might lose my temper. I say this because my brother was just accused of murdering my mentor, Sharn, and of being Horror-tainted. As of right now, all I will say is this: someone will die. Whether it is my brother for bringing dishonor to himself and my family, or whoever accused him of this falsehood.

I learned about this when I met up with someone from my home village of Valheim. But I'm getting ahead of myself just a bit. While resting up, we had a local Troubadour do some research on our newly acquired thread items. Malorrin did some specific research on his staff and we improved talents and some of us moved up a circle. After that, we headed out back to Valyan's Legacy. It was here that I met up with Orrin, a troll from Valheim.

He came into the tavern where we were eating and I immediately recognized him. He said he had news for me and that we should talk alone. We went over to a corner and told me what he knew. He said that he was waiting for about a week. He had been sent by my mother, Runa. He also told me there was evidence provided by a new troll in the village. After telling me all of this, I agreed to head back with him, telling him that my friends might be coming along.

I returned to our table and told them that I was heading back to my village the next morning and that they were welcome to come along. They agreed to do so, and I find myself writing this down to contain my building rage as I try and figure out who will die. We leave in the morning with me not knowing what I need to know.

When we got to Valheim, we went right to my family's house. My mother was there, and she welcomed my friends in. She told me the same things that Orrin had. She did tell me that Brik was being held prisoner for the crime. I wanted to see him, when the village guard came knocking. They bid me and my companions go with them to see Grond, the village elder.

We went with them to the meeting hall. I saw Grond sitting on his chair, and sitting next to him on a seat lower than his, was the new troll I assumed. We were greeted and I was asked to related my travels around this land. Grond seemed pleased, but still they were unwilling to tell me anything new, and unwilling to let me see Brik today. We were also asked to perform our craft to placate any doubts of taint on our group. My bubbling rage at not getting the answers I wanted almost prevented me from accomplishing my task. But, we were all given passing marks and bidden to leave.

After that, I could only feel something nagging at me about the new troll, while Gir and Kira mentioned something about sneaking in and seeing my brother sometime in the night. So, I walked back to my family's house with everybody and we planned to investigate in the morning.

In the morning, Kira told me that her and Gir had plotted to get into see Brik. Kira told me that she had seen him and that he was beaten pretty badly, and that she could detect no Horrors around in Astral space. With this, I embarked to the meeting hall to speak with Grond. The others said they wanted to survey the crime scene. Gir came with me and when we got there, the doors were closed and the guards told me that neither troll was awake yet. After waiting a few minutes, the new troll came out to speak with us.

Among other things, he told us that he was a Wizard and that he used his Evidence Analysis to determine the circumstances surrounding Sharn's death. There was no direct link to Brik, though. He also said that the only reason he was jailed was because he refused to take the craft-test to prove his untaintedness. I implored him to let me see my brother to let me convince him to take the test and prove his innocence. At this point, I was starting to not be convinced by what this new troll had to say. He said that it would still be up to Grond to answer that and that he was still not awake yet. I asked him to send word to me when he did awaken. He agreed and we walked back to my family's home. There we discussed our next course of action.
