Valyan's Heirs

Kira's Journals

Journal,

So, I got a little sidetracked on my quest to exact revenge on that "merchant" who sent us and our fellow adventurers into a trap. I had every intention of tracking that rat down, after a quick stop over in Valyan's Legacy. I had found out some interesting information about my sword, Valor, from Kelric's mother, and was going to make a short day trip back to the cave where we first found it to gather some important facts about it, when Thrak intercepted me on my way out of town. He said that we needed to investigate the assumed disappearance of a few couriers that hadn't returned from where ever it was they went in the first place.

I wasn't really paying attention to what Thrak was saying. I was more upset that I wasn't going to find out what I needed to know about my sword. So, reluctantly, I went along. Only because Thrak is bigger than me, and because we were asked to do this by the leader if Valyan's Legacy.

Thrak, Gir, and I left for this town that the couriers were sent to, but we weren't alone on the journey. We went along with two others, a dwarven Elementalist, and an elven combat mage. They were rather snooty if you ask me, but I'm sure they'll loosen up eventually. Any way, we reached the vicinity of the town in a few days, and soon found the couriers dead in the bushes beside the trail. We knew they were the couriers straight away because lying beneath two of them was a very large, very heavy looking strong box that we were told they were... um... coury-ing. They looked as if something had burned them to death, and then started eating them.

A few yards down a side trail in the forest, we found another pair of people. They looked like they had died in pretty much the same way, but they were definitely not couriers. They looked like they were just villagers that stumbled into the wrong forest at the wrong time.

We were about to set out to look for the answer to this riddle, when the answer found us first. Gir said they were something called "lightning-something-or-others," but they were these lizards that shot lightning out of their eyes and had electric shields around their bodies. I wish I could remember what they were called. Any way, we squished them pretty easily with nothing more than a few singed eyebrows, and went back to the road to the village, with plans of course to come back and retrieve the bodies of the couriers and the villagers.

Our main concern at that point, however, was to make sure that none of those lighting reptile thingys got into the village. Shoot! I wish I could remember what she called them. Well, we got the village in almost no time at all, and soon found out that lightning thingys were the least of our problems. The first things we saw after the buildings were five dead bodies. Two of them looked like they were just villagers, but the other two were definitely obsidimen. They were all mangled and mashed. From what we could gather, they had, plain and simple, beat each other to death. We moved on to see if we could find any survivors of this attack, and were rudely reminded that corpses can't be trusted; especially when they become cadavermen. They caught us by surprise, but we handled them pretty handily and moved on to the next problem.

Finding the survivors wasn't that hard actually. They had all hidden in the basement of what looked to be their town hall. We assured them through the door that we were not going to attack them, and they let us in. Come to think of it, they aren't very smart villagers. We could have had every intention of destroying every last one of them, and all we had to do was say we would be nice and they let us in. Silly commoners.

Anyway, they told us that the town was attacked by crazed obsidimen, and they had all hidden in the basement in hopes that help would arrive or the obsidimen would go away. The news about the obsidimen was very disturbing. They are usually a very subdued race, and rarely attack anyone, unless they are provoked, threatened, or insulted, and by the look of them, these villagers would not have provoked a mushroom into attacking their village. And certainly weren't eloquent enough even to insult a mosquito into biting them.

Moving along, we were about to lead them out of the basement, when four more obsidimen appeared in the doorway behind us. We were rudely shoved out of their cozy little basement, and engaged the obsidimen head on. Come to find out, the villagers were not kidding when they said the obsidimen were crazed. There was a look in their eyes as if something had entered their very souls and began hacking away at them. Well, as much of a shame as it was, we had to destroy them. I myself took down three out of the four. That's how I earned my new nickname: "Stonecutter."

Our resident Elementalist, I forget his name. Suggested that if the obsidimen's life rock was tainted, they might be tainted themselves and that would explain their strange behavior. The villagers told us that the obsidimen came from the west, so we set out in that direction searching for this so-called "life stone." Oddly enough, we found it. It was in a cave near what looked like a rock quarry. The strangest thing was that there were markings around the entrance to the cave that the elf, I forget his name, said were part of a ward, probably to keep things out of the cave, or perhaps to keep the obsidimen in. We weren't sure what to do about it, so we returned to the village and told the people that they shouldn't have any more problems, but if they did to send a messenger to Valyan's Legacy immediately. I knew full well that crazed obsidimen could come back at any time, but figured it was best if they just set to rebuilding their village as soon as possible.

We, on the other hand, returned to Valyan's Legacy and set out again as soon as possible to find a nearby tribe of obsidimen that could give us a way to stop the crazed obsidimen from attacking the village. We told them what happened and how we took care of the problem, as sad as it was. I did happen to leave out how I got my new nickname. They told us that they would travel to the tainted life rock and see what they could do about the attacks and possibly about restoring the ward on the cave.

With that situation dealt with, we returned to Valyan's Legacy and settled down for, what I think is a well deserved rest. I look forward to traveling out to the cave where we found Valor tomorrow. Perhaps I can find out what I need to know before we have our next great adventure.

Oh, I almost forgot! The two other travelers, the dwarf and the snooty elf, are now a part of our semi-permanent traveling party. I just hope you-know-who lightens up a little, or our travels won't be very fun at all from here on out.
