Valyan's HeirsKira's JournalsJournal, I finally have my revenge, as unexpected as it may have come. Let me explain. After finishing our duties at Thrak's home village we headed to Urupa to report our findings of the Tolwyn Protectorate to Fellidra Jer. Before heading south, though, we dropped Arvid off at the jail in Valyan's Legacy as a known murderer. We took Hound with us, in hopes that Fellidra could do something to help him. We arrived in Urupa safely, our travels passing uneventfully, and immediately reported to the city council building in the very center of town. Fellidra was not in, so we left a message saying that we were in town and had news for only her ears. We said she could find us at the inn Garlen's Blessing once she got our message. After leaving the council building, we headed out into the city to get some our new items looked at and maybe do a little training. Gir found a respectable man to identify her collar, Thrak's helmet, and get a little more information on Valor. It took him a few days, but he finally found out everything I needed to know. I hear he did well with Gir's and Thrak's items as well. Malorrin, however, went off on his own to do a little bargain hunting and found a less-than-reliable source to identify his staff for a very low price, though it did pay off in the end. We retired to the inn and got ourselves a room. Night had barley fallen when a messenger arrived saying that Fellidra wanted us to come to her manor for dinner that evening. We thought that was a very good idea. Not only for a free meal, but also because one never knew who might be listening to a private conversation at the local inn. So, we followed the messenger to the council woman's home, a lovely and elegant place, for a wonderful meal and to fill Fellidra in on what happened up north. We told her the whole story; about Brik being accused of murder and being horror marked, about Markham and his plotting, about Sallah and the now imprisoned Arvid, about Hound whom we had left at the temple of Garlen upon our arrival in hopes they could help him, and everything Arvid had told us about the Tolwyn Protectorate and their new leader, Protector Michael. Fellidra was pleased and disturbed by our news. I had a feeling she would be. She seemed very thoughtful once we finished our story. We didn't discuss much more about the protectorate to Fellidra. She seemed like she wanted to think the situation over, maybe do some more investigating, before acting on anything. Though did ask us to stay in town for a few days until she could think of an idea and talk to some people. So, we thanked Fellidra for dinner and went back to our humble little inn to wait for word from her. The next day after our dinner with Fellidra, Malorrin received a package at the inn. It contained a staff and a note. The note was from the man that Malorrin had left his staff with. It read "I have returned your staff. I am sorry, but I could find nothing out about it. My apologies, Abraham Kelson." I have to admit, it was a good try, but Malorrin, not to mention myself and a few others at our table, recognized it at once as a forgery. Obviously, the rat bastard had recognized the staff as a thread item immediately and intended to keep it for himself all along, which was why he was charging such a low price, because he thought he would make out with more in the end. And that name sounded oddly familiar too me. Thrak's brow furrowed a bit too, but I think I just shrugged it off and readied myself for a good man hunt. So, the whole lot of us went to the building where Malorrin dropped off his staff, and found the building deserted. There was not even a trace of the conniving idiot. Luckily, the nosy landlady across the street knew where we might get information about where he went. She said he rented a cart from the man down the street, so we went to see him. The man down the street knew who we were talking about and mentioned that his assistant had helped Kelson load up his things and move across the city. So, we hired the kid to lead us to the dirty cheat's new establishment. He did indeed lead us right to it, and Malorrin tossed him a copper for the trouble. We found the cart, now empty, in back of the building. Thrak, Malorrin, Charye, and Rayne took the front door, while Gir and I went around to the back, just in case the back-stabbing worm decided to make a run for it, which he undoubtedly would. We listened at the door for a moment, but heard nothing. The door was unlocked, but we didn't want to go in just yet. We only had to wait for a few minutes until we heard Thrak's thundering feet in the front room and a voice on the other side of the door say "I'll be right out!" That voice struck something in the back of my mind like a new born ghenis running into a brick wall. I couldn't put my finger on exactly where I knew it from, but I knew it was from quite a while ago and I was positive I didn't like it. Sure enough, a second later, Thrak's footsteps sounded once more, closer this time, and that wretched voice spoke once more. "I said I'd be right..." The voice stopped in mid-sentence and I could tell its owner saw something he didn't like. That instant was all I needed, and I swung open the door to see something that just made my day. I didn't remember feeling that good since being in the presence of the glorious Queen Alachia. The terrified face Gir and I met on the other side of the door was none other than that of Abel Keller, the two-faced, underhanded, no-good, lower-than-dirt creep that set us up for the trap in that gorge. I should have known by the note he sent Malorrin. Abel Keller. Abraham Kelson. The two were too close for me not to realize the connection. Anyway, he took one look at Thrak and decided it would be better to run around the windlings. He turned to try to get around Gir and me to get out the back door, but he really didn't stand a chance. Gir landed a couple of blows on him that would have knocked Thrak to the floor. He was out like a drunken elf, and all we had to do was call for the guards to come pick him up and take him to the jail until he was tried for a number of crimes. We were, of course, asked to stay in the city to be present at his hearing and give evidence, to which we were happy to oblige. At least Thrak, Gir, and I were. The others were a bit mystified at to why were so overly happy about catching him. We filled them in later. So, all in all, I'd say this visit to Urupa is going much better than the last one. We are spending the next few days just seeing the sights and training, maybe making a little money on the side. There's always someone who needs help in a big city like this. I'm just waiting for Kelson's trial, if that's even his real name, and waiting to see what Fellidra has to say about the Protectorate. |
