Riders on the StormAdventure Journals22 Raquas After the ceremony of stories and questions we helped the pale ones clean up their island. This gave me time to ponder two questions that bothered me. During the ceremony the Shivalahala proved very adept at questioning us. When answering her queries I realized that I might be violating the blood oath on secrecy. I don't remember the exact wording of the oath, so I can only hope that I did not violate it. No one has mentioned seeing the mark of an oathbreaker on me, so maybe I'm safe. If nothing has happened by morning I think I can stop worrying. Of more importance is the question of Rensil. His flying carpet worries me. He got the spell out of Listnar's grimoire, which I generously lent him. However, the spell should have been too strong for him to cast. This leaves two possibilities: Either he is more powerful than he appears and tries to hide it from us, or he has been dabbling in raw magic. The second option scares me shitless. When we were pursuing Par Darkwood, we noticed some oddities in our companion Rosper. Rensil's idea was to use raw magic to cast a spell called 'Unmask'. I convinced him that the danger of raw magic far outweighed the possible gain from the spell. Given the truth of the situation, I'm sure Rensil feels that he was right, and this has fed his desire for using raw magic. He now seems totally immune to logic and reason. I fear he used raw magic to enchant his carpet and escaped any direct consequences. The next time we face a difficult situation, is he going to overextend his power and leave us all vulnerable to his magic? He obviously used blood magic to increase the carpet's duration. It seems reasonable, if he went to the trouble to use raw magic in the first place. I'm tempted to dispel the magic of his carpet, to teach him the ephemeralness of his spell, but given his bent, it would only encourage him. Oh well. Maybe the carpet will come in handy. 23 Raquas I have heard of people across Barsaive who seemingly have the power to cause future events simply by speaking of them. They call this ability 'Bard's Tongue'. I'm afraid I might have just discovered 'Wizard's Pen'! During our trip throug the Dragon's Jaws Dorra nad Ulm flipped the raft. I was caught unprepared, got my lungs filled with water and couldn't stay afloat. Rensil saved me by dragging me behind his carpet to safety. Safety, of course, being a relative term. We washed up on a beach just out of view of the steamship. We then argued, seemingly for an hour, about what to do next. There was a whole camp of dwarves and pale ones near the ship, and combined with the crew of the ship it seemed too muh for even us to assault. Our final decision was to wait until the ship left again, and then investigate the camp. We found a site just downstream and settled in to wait. 25 Raquas Two days of waiting, and I'm sick of the smell of wet troll. This sandbar would be cramped even without Ulm. But finally, the ship left. According to the 'intelligence' gathered by Mica and Silar, there were three buildings on the beach. We tried to slip by them unnoticed, but guards challenged Mica and Silar. Mica, in typical fashion, became bored with any attempt at subterfuge, drew, and attacked. We had little trouble with the dwarves until Dorra, showing off again, leapt into a neutral group of pale ones and started flailing about with her sword. They would have rent her limb from limb if Silar had not distracted them, and I levitated them out of danger. Rensil used a Monstrous Mantle on Ulm, turning him into a jehuthra. Quite amusing, actually, as Ulm never realized it. It does humble me somewhat to see Rensil using his illusions creatively, whereas I join the fray. I just lose my head when the action starts. Not good for a wizard. We are sitting on the beach, waiting for Dorra to recover enough to go on. There are two cave openings in front of us. Silar has explored one and says it overlooks the Dragon's Jaws. The other must lead further into the mine. (???) One of the buildings seems to be a smithy, but for what? And who are these dwarves? They bear weapons with a crest I don't recognize. What have we stumbled onto? |
