Riders on the Storm

Adventure Journals

Editor's Note: This entry is a bit unusual, coming as it does from the warped mind of Rensil's player, Mark. The player is a bit of a local gaming legend, famous for his unusual characters and role-playing. For a taste of this off-center mind, read his theories on The Great Blanket of Barsaive.

The adventure described here was a secret mission, and Mark took steps to show how Rensil was doing his best to keep the information secret. The entire entry was written in reverse -- mirror-writing. This entry is transcribed out normally, but you should see what he presented to us!

**********

I begin my entry today by saying how happy I am to be travelling with my companions. I have learned more while I have been with them than I ever have before. Now I hope to teach them a little bit of the something of which I am ever so good at, perception.

Part of understanding what is going on is to pay attention to your surroundings. But more important is to be able to interpret what your senses are telling you. The second part is where most are lacking. Most people will accept the simplest explanation for what happens rather than search for a more complicated reason why things are as they are.

I have plans to create a series of tests that will make my friends question what they believe is true.

I just completed my best magical work yet, a flying carpet. I had to use Raw Magic (*) to be able to cast the spell, and I extended the duration with blood magic. I am beginning to believe that everything I was taught about Raw Magic is not true. I will begin research to determine if Raw Magic is as dangerous as we are told.

Mica joined us in Bartertown before the party for Shadowswift. He brought with him an offer for a job when we returned to Throal. It really was a great party. The others were asking Shadowswift about things that did not interest me. I just wanted to have some fun.

When we got back to Throal, we found that our magical vial had arrived. This device creates a healing potion every day. I was the one who attached a thread to the vial, but it belongs to the party.

Our new mission we got from the job offer Mica brought us. Our mission is a secret so I have encrypted this entry. We are trying to validate the underground rivers that lead out of Throal. A few days into our journey, we were attacked by two spiders.

(*) Note: Raw Magic is a dangerous thing in Earthdawn. Instead of filtering magical energy through a spell matrix, the magician channels magical energy through his own pattern. This typically causes them damage, and also tends to attract the attention of whatever Horrors might be lurking about in astral space. While Tomas doesn't know about Rensil's use of Raw Magic here, he does comment on it in a later journal entry. Back to entry.
