26 Mawag As we had arranged with Drimsby, we awoke early and met with him and the rest of the crew at the airship docks. We will be sailing on the galley Passion's Wind, with a drakkar attached. The crew is a mixed batch of air sailors and city watch, and besides Drimsby we only know four others from our previous adventures -- Radlin and Slilith we had rescued from crashes, and Karl and Yorlk had served with us on the drakkar. The first day's journey was uneventful until evening when a stowaway was found: Kathleen, the serving girl from the inn, had somehow gotten on board and hidden out. It's too late to turn back now, so she's put to work as part of the crew. 27 Mawag Now this is more like it! Karl taught me how to air ski. You tie yourself to the airship with a length of rope and then jump off the stern with your feet lashed to a board. You can actually ride the air and maneuver all around -- it's great fun! Ulm and I got involved in a knife-throwing contest with some of the crew. We both lost, but it sure beats sitting around all day watching the ground go by. Things picked up later in the day when a village being attacked by orks on thundra beasts was spotted. Our group went down in the drakkar, Tomas and I killed three and wounded two very quickly. The rest ran away. There is something to be said for missile weapons... in the right situation. We reached the mountains about nightfall. 28 Mawag We began the search for Spire Peak today. Tomas spotted it about midmorning, and after several tight scrapes we land in a sheltered spot just below the cave mouth we discovered. While the rest of the crew repair the galley, our party takes the drakkar up to the cave. Dora had some trouble with the tricky winds swirling around the peak, but gets us into the cave on the fourth try. This cave had about a foot of snow, but sheltered at the back was a tunnel leading deeper into the mountain. With Ulm clearing a trail, we approached the doorway. (Silar and I had a snowball fight on the way.) The door of the kaer had been broken inward by something big with large claws. Upon entering the kaer we found (of all things) a hand-cranked elevator platform. Unfortunately for me, the crank is set and windling height, and since I'm the shortest member of the group, I get to crank. About sixty feet down we were attacked by large hornet-like creatures. They bite hard, and sometimes attach themselves and suck out blood. There were a lot of them and we passed a very harrowing few minutes before Silar pulled out and lit a torch. Ulm did the same and together they held off the creatures while I cranked us down. We found the nest on the way, and Ulm set it on fire. The creatures left us alone after that. After much cranking, we reached the first level. Windling skeletons and broken buildings are everywhere. Our information seems to be, at best, misleading. We decided to rest for a few hours before pressing on, and I took a few minutes to record the events thus far. |
